Athletes are some of the most exciting, hard-working and inspiring people in the world. My aim is to capture this.

Sam Todd Photographer - Sam Todd - University College Dublin

I’m a photographer and director based on the South Coast, working across London and beyond, specialising in sport and lifestyle.

I love photographing people doing what they do best. Spending time with elite athletes is one of the best parts of the job. Seeing the commitment, discipline and sacrifice it takes to perform at that level is genuinely inspiring, and I always come away from those shoots wanting to push myself a little harder.

Over the last few years I’ve worked with global brands, sports teams and athletes, creating both stills and motion for campaigns, partnerships and editorial projects. Whether I’m working with a Formula 1 team, in a gym or on a football pitch, my approach stays the same: creating strong, considered imagery that captures the intensity, personality and ambition of the people in front of the camera.

Sport has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up, it was where I felt most connected. It gave me a place to belong, build friendships and challenge myself. As I’ve got older, that connection has only grown stronger. I love the way sport brings people together, creates communities and gives people something to work towards. That’s what keeps me drawn to it, and what I’m always looking to capture.

When I’m not working, you’ll probably find me on a golf course, at CrossFit pretending I enjoy burpees, or attempting to keep a 1970s motorbike on the road.

If you’ve got a project you’d like to chat about, I’d love to hear from you.

How I like to work

I work across photography and motion, with a focus on movement, performance and people.

Every project starts with understanding the brief and what the final images need to achieve. From there, it’s about understanding the sport, the athlete and how they move. Whether I’m working alongside coaches, movement directors or the athletes themselves, I want every frame to feel authentic to the performance.

Lighting plays a huge part in how I shape an image. Sometimes I’m working with natural light, sometimes I’m building it from scratch, but the aim is always the same: to create images that feel natural, premium and considered. If someone looks at a photograph and assumes it was simply there, that’s probably the biggest compliment I can get.

Every project is different, so I work with a trusted group of producers, stylists, assistants and crew, scaling the team to suit each production while keeping the creative approach consistent across both stills and motion.

Representation

I’m currently unrepresented in the UK and not looking to change that.

For projects requiring larger teams and full production support, I collaborate with a trusted network of experienced producers to ensure everything runs seamlessly from start to finish.

I am open to representation in the USA and Asia, where the right partnership could help build and scale long-term opportunities.
